Hot on the heels of our forthcoming rallies in Europe, Africa, South America and the Himayalyas, Rally Round is thrilled to announce four fantastic new events for 2019, 2020 and 2021, with destinations ranging from picturesque France and beautiful Italy to fascinating Japan and the stunning wilds of Mongolia. If you’re looking for an adventure – long or short, near or far – you’ve come to the right place!
Scheduled for 16-21 September 2019, the first of our new events is the latest in our annual series of week-long summer rallies celebrating the pioneers of early motorsport, and another opportunity to win the prestigious Charles Jarrott Trophy. The world’s first motor race ran from Paris to Bordeaux and back in 1895, but rather than follow that rather straightforward route, Clerk of the Course Fred Bent is plotting a much more ambitious event, starting from Versailles and exploring the charming country roads of western and central France, not to mention a couple of classic race circuits, before finishing in the glamorous seaside resort of Biarritz. Odyssey Italia II, 2020
2020 is shaping up to be a fabulous year, beginning with February’s magnificent tour of the royal palaces of Rajasthan, the Maharajah Marathon (click here for details). Two months later we’ll be enjoying another luxurious experience as we revisit the Mediterranean for Odyssey Italia II. Crews who enjoyed our highly successful first Odyssey in 2017 will recall that Kim Bannister’s original ‘dream route’ included the stunning island of Elba, which we were obliged to cut when the FIA announced a major historic stage rally there on the same dates. We should have no such problems in May 2020, when we return for another two-week adventure. This time we’ll be running in the opposite direction, starting from the beautiful Tuscan capital of Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance, and exploring Elba and Sardinia before finishing in Ajaccio, Corsica. The 2nd Samurai Challenge, 2020
Our fabulous Samurai Challenge in Spring 2017 was such a great success that we have decided to return to Japan in 2020 for a second bite of the cherry, if not the cherry blossom; this time we will be travelling in October and following a circular route that starts and finishes in the dazzling city of Tokyo. In addition to the stunning scenery, ancient temples, amazing food and mind-boggling culture, we will be revisiting the delightful Sado Island, home of the Kodo Drummers and the venue for one of 2017’s most memorable regularity sections. Pure Mongolia, 2021
Luxury is more than fine cuisine and comfy beds. It also encompasses the exclusive opportunity to enjoy experiences that most people can only dream of, and in that sense our next rally, Pure Mongolia, is one of the most luxurious events we have yet organised. Starting and finishing in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, this three-week, 5,000km rally in May 2021 will loop north, south, east and west to explore this remote, wildly beautiful and fascinating land. Route designer and Clerk of the Course Kim Bannister has previously run four major rallies through Mongolia and has long wished for an opportunity to explore the country more widely. Visiting far-flung locations such as Ushglin Uvur, Amarbayasgalant, Ganga Lake and the Khongor Sand Dunes, the new event will include several rest days and entertainments such as a Naadam festival of horsemanship and archery. “Mongolia is surely the world’s final frontier,” says Kim, “and this might be the last opportunity to experience it before its ancient traditions are extinguished.”
Chiefly following dirt roads and tracks, competitors will navigate via GPS coordinates using a straightforward, tulip-style roadbook with additional route arrows on difficult sections, but the event won’t be excessively arduous; daily driving distances will be limited to 300km on unmade sections or 400km on tarmac and there will be no need for hazardous speeds or night driving. Timed sections will decide the overall rally results but those who don’t wish to compete are very welcome to join a touring category.
Crews will spend most nights camping under canvas, albeit with comprehensive catering, washing and toilet facilities; the rally will also be accompanied by expert medical and mechanical support teams, including a vehicle recovery service. As on all other Rally Round events, you may rely on the highest levels of customer care and comprehensive pre- and post-event assistance. It’s sure to be unforgettable experience for all who are privileged to take part. However, the number of available places is strictly limited and interested parties are advised to contact us as soon as possible to avoid disappointment; you may do so via the enquiry form on our Pure Mongolia event page – click here.
