Rally Round is at the Silverstone Classic race meeting this weekend (July 24-26), where the Wenman boys are racing a Jaguar C-Type and a Cooper Bristol. If you’re attending the event, do please come and see us at our stand on the Village Green, where Rally Round Director Liz Wenman and Rally Co-ordinator Heidi Winterbourne will be on hand to answer any classic rally questions you might have and discuss our forthcoming events (see below). Heidi is particularly looking forward to meeting old friends and former customers as she returns to the forefront of the rally world.
As if that weren’t reason enough to visit us, the Rally Round stand is located next to that of Hawker Restorations, world leaders in the restoration of Hawker Hurricanes and other vintage aircraft. This year sees the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and anyone who shares our interest in things mechanical will be fascinated by the part-restored MkI Hurricane on display, one of only two survivors of the type. It’s often said that the Hurricane was a ‘simpler’ aircraft than the Spitfire, but that’s very far from the truth, and the level of engineering skill required to restore one to flying condition is quite astonishing. Perhaps even more amazing is that an airworthy Hurricane costs less than some sports cars! For more information we recommend the new Hawker Restorations website, and indeed the equally new website of sister company Hawker Racing, which applies the same exceptional level of engineering skill to historic road and racing cars.
Back on the subject of rallying, we’re delighted to report that we have completed the detailed route planning for next year’s Haka Classic in New Zealand, which starts from Auckland on October 30 and winds its way from the North to the South Island, finishing in Christchurch on November 25. The route includes some of the best driving roads anywhere in the world and the scenery is simply breathtaking – highlights include the Forgotten World Highway, the Black Birch Range and several famous race circuits. Our man on the ground in NZ is Rhys Nolan, who not only has a vast knowledge of the country but is a top-class rallyist, so knows how to find roads that offer both spectacular scenery and an unforgettable driving challenge.
Entries are also flying in thick and fast for next summer’s Paris-Vienna Rally, which is shaping up be an unmissable event. Celebrating the epic Paris-Vienna race of 1902, it will run from 13-18 June, starting from the Royal Palace at Fontainebleau on the southern outskirts of Paris and traversing the Alps to finish with a black-tie gala dinner at the exquisite, Imperial-style Hotel Schloss Wilhelminenberg in Vienna. Although a competitive rally, the schedule has been planned to offer comfortable daily distances and plenty of time for socialising, while also making it easy to plan extra time in two of Europe’s most romantic cities if you wish.
Before all that we have this November’s Thunder Dragon Rally to Bhutan to look forward to, and more immediately a short summer break. The Rally Round office will be operating on reduced hours throughout August, although we will still be answering calls and emails as promptly as possible. We’ll be back to full-time operations in September, when we’ll also be announcing some very exciting news.
If we don’t see you at Silverstone, we hope you can come and see us at the Goodwood Revival (September 11-13), where we’ll also have a stand. In the meantime drive safely, and have a great summer!
